Visualization of Ossification Centers in Knee Joints of Korean Newborn : Its Value in Prediction of Fetal Maturity

Abstract
The 156 cases (86 male, 70 female) of newborn infants were studies for visualization of ossification centers in knee joints, who were born in Chosun University Hospital during the first of January to the last of July, 1974, comparing with several criteria such as bodyweight, body length, head circumference of newborn and gestation. Those were evaluated, and their correlation with fetal maturity was studied retrospectively.
1. Frequency of visualization of ossification centers was higher slightly in female than male (about 10%).
2. Distal femoral ossification centers were visualized in 139 out of 156 cases, and 88%¢¥-95% (average 93%) of 139 were regarded as mature by several criteria.
3. Proximal tibial ossification centers were found in 65 cases, 92%6-97% of 65 cases were mature by various criteria. That means the frequency of visualization of ossification centers is slightly higher in proximal tibia than in distal femur in the mature.
4. Presence of ossification centers of distal femur were associated with the mature newborn (birth weight more than 2,500gm.) in 129 out of 138 cases (approximately 93%). However, 9 out of 17 cases (53%) of newborn with absent distal femoral oasification centers were mature by birth weight (more than 2, 500 gm. ).
5. In proximal tibial ossification centers, rate of non-visualization of the mature newborn by several criteria was 80%~92% (average 90%). Therefore, an absent ossification centers in newborn was not ipso facto evidence of prematurity.
6. Frequency of visualization of ossification centers in premature by several criteria was 45%~ 68%, (average 54%), in distal femur and was 18%~38% (average 25%) in proximal tibial ossification center. Therefore, negative finding dose not mean premature in any way.
